200th anniversary Gesellschaft für Musikfreunde - (roughly translated it means Friend's of the music society). Here is a bit of information on the Musikverein from their internet page:

"The Musikverein - a resonant name, a scintillating idea. Strictly speaking, it has a twofold meaning: the concert hall on Vienna's Karlsplatz and the society to which this building belongs, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Music Lovers) in Vienna. Two different things which belong inseparably together. What would the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde be without its magnificent concert hall and what would the concert hall be without the society?"

210th birthday of Carl Ritter von Ghega, who constructed the Semmering Railway and 160th anniversayr of one of the viaducts on this railway.

Ballet and Opera

This card shows the Bolshoi Theatre, the world famous theatre, know for its performances of ballet and opera. Last week I have been to the Vienna State Opera and watched a ballet. And the leading dancers were - of course - from Russia. They have a long standing tradition for ballet.

Skiing season

The new skiing season has started, at least for the professional athletes. There was the opening in Sölden, then Levi and soon there will be the North American races. So in honor of our skiers, I wanted to show you a famous skiing area in Italy: The Dolomites and the city of Cortina. This area is also a UNESCO World (Nature) Heritage Site.

Sunday stamps #96

This week the theme for Sunday Stamps is "Anything you wish".

This week, the 2 year old panda cub Fu Hu has started his journey to China. We have two Giant Pandas in the Vienna zoo. They are here on loan from China for the Giant Panda conservation program. They had two babies until now, Fu Long and Fu Hu. When the cubs are two years old, they have to go to China to a Giant Panda station where they live together with other Giant Pandas.

This stamp shows one of the Giant Panda cubs, not sure which one.
