Feldpost

Our National Day was Oct 26 (see my post here) and there were different kinds of activities going on in Vienna, among others a kind of military exhibition that even included a military postal service. I used the chance to mail myself a postcard via Feldpost. You pay the normal postage fee but get a special cancellation. They also used a stamp with a military theme.

I was so surprised to receive a stamp with snow on it -
whenever I think of Australia, it's summer and heat, but never snow!

And now we are on the way to New Zealand - to congratulate the 

All Blacks on winning the Rugby Worldcup!

Here you can see the Haka, the traditional dance
of the Maori. The All Blacks also do this dance before their game starts.

Office mail

What makes the card special is not really the picture, but how it was delivered! It came via "Tischpost" (literally: table-mail), because my colleague brought me this card from her weekend away in the Wachau area. And she did not send it via Austrian mail, she delivered it personally from her desk to mine :)

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

This beautiful card was sent by Eellaa. I have visited this church when I was in Tallinn in 2010, but then it was summer. The old town must look charming in winter!

Mount Jefferson

First, I thought this card was from Switzerland, but it shows Mount Jefferson in Oregon.

"Mount Jefferson is a prominent feature of the landscape in the High CascadeRange. It is one of thirteen major volcanic centers in the Cascade Range and has erupted repeatedly for hundreds of thousands of years. The last eruption occurres approximately 15.000 years ago, during the last major glaciation period. Although there has not been an eruption at Mount Jefferson for some time, experience at explosive volcanoes everywhere suggests that Mount Jefferson cannot be regarded as extinct."

As you might have realized, I changed my blog design. The cards in the background are all cards from Austria which I have put together to form a postcard collage. Above is one of my favorite cards, showing a culinary map of Austria and the the funny characters Mo and Mei.

These cards are from a swap with ziga:

Lipizzaner horses - they are from Lipica originally, that is where they received their name from.
They are also bred in Piber, Styria and if they are suited they will be moved to Vienna
and train for the Vienna Spanish Riding School.

This is another wonderful Did you know card from Aussiebear. And no, I did not know that the banana is not a tree. I did know about the new plants developing at the base of the old plant because we have a banana plant at home :)
