Scandinavian cards

Here are Scandinavian cards. The first card says "Surprise-Mail". It's such a cute card and was sent by kotona for the DecemberRR.

This card shows the beautiful city of Stockholm. I've been to Stockholm twice and I absolutely love the city. The card was sent by azzurri for the December RR - a really good choice! The text on the card says: "Boats moored to the quay at Skeppsbron, the Old town".

And finally a map card of Scandinavia. This card was sent by krookus for the December RR.

Bielefeld II

And more cards from the Bielefeld Meeting! The first card shows "The Christmas automatiek", a typical Dutch vending machine. MarianneJS sent this card as a RAS.

Bielefeld Meeting I

These cards are from the HUGE postcrossing meetup in Bielefeld (03.-05.12.2010). The first card was sent by anjaaustel for the December RR. It also shows the 2010 Cultural Capital of Europe.

Dallas, Texas

This card is from Dallas, Texas. I like the way Americans always name the city and the State. Well, it makes sense consodering that there are often five or ten (or many more) cities with the same name...but I also think it's because people like the State they are from or are proud to be born in a certain State. Here in Austria, nobody mentions the home-Bundesland (state). I guess there are two reasons why: 1. There is normally not that huge an amount of cities bearing the same name and 2. you will mostly hear from which part of Austria people are. There are quite distinctive dialects in Austria.

But back to the card. It shows the spot where late President John F. Kennedy was shot dead in 1963. Today there is a museum on this site which is a popular tourist attraction, especially on the anniversary of the assassination. Thank you, Aurora, for this card that arrived for the December RR.

Oh, and I have another question: Is there anyone out there who can explain where the slogan "Don't mess with Texas" does come from? If so, please leave a comment! I would really appreciate it!

Holiday greetings

This card was sent by RikeH from her holidays in Vietnam. She reported happily that the temperature was about 27°C - quite the opposite from the winterwonderland in Europe at the end of November!

Snappy Lunch

This RAS card came from Monica (atotalnobody). It shows the Snappy Lunch in Mt. Airy, NC. Here is what the cards tells us about the Snappy Lunch: "One of Surry County's registered historical landmarks, Snappy Lunch was Mt. Airy's first business to be mentioned on the Abdy Griffith Show, by Andy himself. Opened in 1923, Snappy Lunch is the home of the famous 'Pork Chop sandwich'."

This super cute card came from my dearest Zasalein as a RAS card. It shows some stereotypical Swiss things. Sara says she lives near the cheese fondue.

NZ travelling card

A kiwi on a card from the land of kiwis, sent by jjcob. The card says: "A little spotted kiwi in its native habitat. Seldom seen in the daylight, it forages for its food at nihgt in the dense forest."

I have received many kiwi cards, but that's the first that actually shows a kiwi!

Hawaii

This is an official postcrossing card (US-896171) and came with an Aloha from Lauren. Another place I definitely want to visit.

Did you know?

This card is from the "Did you know"-RR and was sent by cindy79.

The card told me facts about cupcakes:

• that no one really knows where cupcakes come from, but that they made their appearance in the US in the 19th century.
• that the name comes from the time when the cakes were baked in tea/coffee cups

I love cupcakes, though not the real US cupcakes with the buttercream frosting - that's a bit too much for me. Instead I prefer the one with a mascarpone or curd. There is a small cupcake shop and bakery near the place I work and their cakes are so delicious. They have a huge variety of cakes, even vegan, and the cakes change with the season. There was the delicious mulled wine cupcake during Christmas time, and with the new year they introduced the cranberry cupcake. Guess I have to go there and try the new choices!

Animal hospital

Here is a wonderful card from Aussiebear for the October RR. Alison told me that the volunteers at this animal hospital do a wonderful job caring for sick, injured and orphaned koalas.

The card came with a matching koala stamp. Thank you!

Private swap

This card is from a private swap with SusanaPortugal. It shows the famous yellow trams of Lisbon, a city I definitely want to go to one day!

Praha

This card is a resend for the August RR from Duplevista. The original card was lost somewhere on the way...where do all these cards vanish? This card shows the "Dancing house", originally named "Ginger & Fred" - after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, as the house resembles a pair of dancers - in Prague, Czech republic. The building was designed by Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in co-operation with Canadian architect Frank Gehry on a vacant riverfront plot.

This card has been waiting some time to be uploaded - I'm getting so many cards and there seems to be less time to scan and update these days. This card was sent by pinuccia for the October RR. Thank you!

Cornish Pasty

I regularely take part in the huge monthlyRR on the pc-forum , but I had to skip the November round. I missed it so much...so I was happy when the sign up for December started and the cards arrived again! Here is Duplevista's choice for this month:

Andy tells me that these pasties are really yummy, but only the real Cornish ones. And here is what the card says: "The Cornish pasty was the chief diet of the Cornish miners and fishermen about 150 years ago. Pasties were made with a variety of sweet and savoury fillings to suit the individual's taste. Each pasty was marked with its future consumer's initials on one end. He would start eating at the opposite end in case a portion was left over for another meal. The pasty was a convenient meal for the miner to take underground and hundreds od thousands must have been eaten in Cornwall's mines."
Thank you, Andy, for your card. I'd love to try a pasty - a real Cornish one, of course!
