Sunday stamps time again!

Today's theme is internet stamps. Here you see two examples: The first one is from Germany, the other one is from the US. A cute one with an Anne Geddes picture on it.

Here in Austria you can also get your own picture on a stamp, of course it costs more than the amount printed on it. People normally use it for weddings or as a present to someone graduating. Now I will have a look at the other participants on this Sunday stamps event!

It's Fondue time!

That's a card I love. It shows the famous Swiss cheese fondue. It's an official card, CH-72852 that travelled 3 days and 548 km.

I never had a cheese fondue, but the card brought the recipe along, so maybe I will try it. I just have one question: Does one really just dip bread in the cheese?

...from Florida says the card, but in fact it's from Rochester, NY. I think I drove through the city or passed it when we were in the US. This was an official card, US- 955756, that travelled 10 days and 6864 kms.

Vietnam

Here is a card from JOinHanoi, showing the traditional Vietnamese long dress.

The sender of this official card told me that these pies are called "vlaai" and were originally created in the Dutch province of Limburg, but are now popular all over the Netherlands. Thank you! The card traveleed 808 km in 11 days!

Sunday Stamps!

This week's Sunday stamps theme is: Presidents. The theme was chosen because it's soon President's Day in the US. I searched through my cards but could not find a stamp with a US President. In fact, all I could find were kings or queens, but not even one stamp with a president. So I went shopping on Friday and bought a stamp of our President, Dr. Heinz Fischer.

Turkey

I like this card as it shows a totally different side of Turkey. Thank you, Pinar!

This special card arrived for the vacation RR from travelcard. It shows the United Nation Headquarter in New York City. I passed this building when doing a tour with the hop on - hop off bus. We also have a UN building here in Vienna and I have taken a tour there. It's really special, as you are not longer on Austrian soil when you enter this building, but on international ground, with their own police force. We were just three people touring then and that was great as we could ask all of our questions! There I learned that the UN pays a symbolic 1 cent rent for their Vienna offices.

The UN also have their own stamps and cancellations as you can see below.

This official card shows Paklenica National Park. The sender wrote: There's a park, the sea and mountains - everything you need!

My first card from South Africa was supposed to arrive two years ago when my Dad's girlfriend went there for a congress. Half the cards she sent reached their destination, the other half got eaten by the postal monster [I read this expression in someone's postcrossig profile, and instantely loved it. So many cards vanish and there really must be a dark force in the postal universe ;) So the thought of a monster appealed with me.] Yes, of course, my card was in the half that vanished. You can imagine that I was really happy when Crystal-Ali from Soth Afrcia joined the Monthly RR. And here is the fantastic card she sent and the stamp with the Soccer World Cup Trophy.

Kiwi cards

Both cards are from jenniferb for the MonthlyRR (Dec & Jan). The first card shows the Westpac Trust Stadium, "a state of the art international class facility with 31.000 public seats. Located behind the Railway Station giving coventient access by train, bus or 20 min walk from City Centre." (text on the back of the card)

And here is the flag: As you can see on the second card it is really dangerous for a card to travel through the postal system. It got bent...

Today, the last women's event took place in Garmisch-Pertenkirchen at the Alpine World Championship. Yeah, and our ski girls were successfull again, making a gold and a silver medal. Congrats! Ski-Austria is so proud of you :-)

That's why I decided to show you some snow and mountains today. This beautiful card shows the Wallis in Switzerland and was sent by my Swiss friend zasa! Bussi und Danke!

The Dutch Royal Family

If you follow my blog you know I love a good romance. And what's more romantic than a pronce finding his princess? So here is HRH Princess Màxima. The card is from Jokejacket for the JanRR.

Here are some more family members on the Prinsjedag, Amsterdam 2007. This card was an official NL- 531632.

And this card is from a private swap with Dees. It's one of the Wedding Picture which I saw on tv, but I'm quite sure I have mentioned that before!

Year of the rabbit

Yes, I know, it's a bit late for New Year's celebrations, but as usually time just flew by...As you may know, we have the Year of the rabbit now. According to wikipedia, the (traditional) Chinese zodiac follows the lunisolar Chinese calendar, the switch-over date is the Chinese New Year, not January 1 as in the Gregorian calendar [click]. So the year of the rabbit started Feb 3rd 2011 and will end Jan 22nd 2012. In Vietnam it's year of the cat now by the way, as the rabbit is replaced by a cat there. Could not find the reason for that though. So if anyone knows why the cat was replaced by a rabbit or the other way around, please leave a comment!

Celebrating France...

As hard as it is for my poor Austrian heart, but today I have to congratulate France on their victory in today's team event at the Alpine Ski World Championships... So I thought a card depicting French cheese is a good choice fot this post.

There's usually a theme (there was astronomy for example), but this week, you can feature a theme of your own choice. Austria meets the world - Tag

Here are two cards from the Austria meets the world respectively Austria meets Far East tag. The first card was mailed on January 3rd and arrived here yesterday (!) - February 7th! The second card was stamped January 5th but travelled just two weeks. Yep, that's the postal mystery!

The text on the back of the card above says: "An Orang Asli village on the fringe of the Royal Belum Forest Reserve in Perak State."

GAP 2011 - Alpine World Ski Championship

Today was the first day of GAP 2011 - Alpine World Ski Championship. And it was such a successfull day for us! The first event brought the first gold medal for the Austrian Skiteam! Congrats, Liz Görgl! I don't have a matching card for this event, but I received a skiing stamp.

The stamp came with the official card FI-1010330. A cute Moomin card, thank you!

Swedish recipe cards!

Today's post features two Swedish recipe cards! I love them! The first card ist from Bessie for the January RR, the second from lellykate for the World Languages RR #149 Swedish!

A different vie of elephant!

I so love this card and the elephant, proudly showing us his fanny! The card made me smile. I love elephants and enjoy going to the zoo. We have Europe's best zoo here in Vienna (according to a zoo expert Anthony Sheridan) with the Tiergarten Schönbrunn. I tried to find something more about this study, but it seems that it isn't published. All I could find are atricles in Austrian newspapers. Anyway, as I said, I love going to the zoo and the elephants are always a must-visit! They have an elephant-kid again here in Vienna, it's about 3 years old and called Taluba. So if you ever are in Vienna, take the time to visit the zoo - ideally combine it with a stroll through the parc and a visit to Schönbrunn palace.

One Million Finnish cards!

Not so long ago, the Finnish postcrossers reached the fantastic milestone of +1 million sent postcards! The Finnish are the first country to reach that many cards... We Austrians have sent the enormous amount of 71.000 cards...

This card travelled for 5 days and a distance of 1,628 km. The card says "Long live friendship!" Well, there's nothing more to say!

Nom...nom...nom...food cards! Both cards are from Spain. Actually it's three cards, as the Gazpacho was sent twice by my tag partner.

The first card shows - according to its sender carmncitta - a typical holiday breakfast.

The second card is from the food-tag.
